England are sweating over the fitness of Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the European Championship following Wednesday night’s warm-up win over Austria.
The Liverpool star started the 1-0 friendly victory in Middlesbrough but limped off late on with an apparent thigh injury that looks to have thrown his tournament participation into major doubt.
An update on Alexander-Arnold’s fitness is expected in the next 24 to 48 hours, with Gareth Southgate potentially needing to replace the 22-year-old in his final 26-man tournament squad - with the likes of Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse possibly back in the frame with England obviously well-stocked in the right-back department.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka netted the only goal of the game to give the Three Lions victory over Austria, but England - who remained without their cohort of players from Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United - had to negotiate a few scares at the Riverside Stadium, while the game was also marred by some fans booing players taking the knee ahead of kick-off.
Elsewhere, a weakened Scotland side claimed a creditable 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in Portugal, while 10-man Wales were soundly beaten 3-0 by France and plan to appeal against Neco Williams’ sending off in Nice.
