Euro 2020 joy and heartache for trio as Miguel Almiron provides Newcastle with fresh injury concern

Miguel Almiron could present Newcastle United with a fresh injury headache after he was taken off in a cart during Paraguay's 2-2 draw with Peru overnight.

The Magpies midfielder has struggled for game-time in the Premier League so far this term and both player and club were keen to use La Albirroja's two World Cup qualifiers this week to pick up some valuable minutes on the pitch.

But instead of giving Newcastle boss Steve Bruce a selection headache, United are now sweating on his fitness.

Almiron was replaced after puling up with a muscle injury in stoppage time of the clash in Asuncion. It came after he took a brutal elbow to the face in the first half which resulted in a yellow card for Peru's Carlos Zambrano.

Paraguay are next in action on Tuesday evening against Venezuela and they, as well as Newcastle and Almiron, will wait anxiously to see whether it was just cramp or something more severe.

It capped off a dramatic night for Newcastle United stars in international action on Thursday evening.

Magpies winger Ryan Fraser came off the bench for Scotland as he helped the Tartan Army edge out Israel to move within one win of reaching their first major tournament since 1998.

Fraser replaced Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack in the 84th minute as he continues to build his match fitness, as Steve Clarke's side emerged victorious via a penalty shootout at Hampden Park.

Scotland will now travel to Serbia next month with the winners securing qualification to next summer's EURO 2020.

Meanwhile, Jamal Lewis continued his positive start to the season as he helped Northern Ireland reach their EURO 2020 play-off final.

The 22-year-old played 120 minutes and put in an energetic display at left-back. Ian Baraclough's side held Bosnia & Herzegovina to a 1-1 draw in Sarajevo before winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout to set up a play-off final with Martin Dubravka's Slovakia at Windsor Park next month.

Slovakia's progress came at the expense of Jeff Hendrick's Republic of Ireland, though, as they emerged victorious in their own penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw in Bratislava.

Hendrick played in the No 10 role and put in a solid display as he completed the full 120 minutes.

Elsewhere, Emil Krafth played the first 45 minutes for Sweden as they beat Russia 2-1 in a friendly in Solna. Magpies outcast Achraf Lazaar will get his first taste of international action this week, when his Morocco side take on Senegal in a friendly in Rabat this evening.
