Euro 2020 Glasgow: Queen's Park residents anger as Recreation Ground turned into temporary car park

Southsiders have shared their anger after Queen's Park Recreation Ground was converted into a temporary car park for Euro 2020.

Nearby Hampden Park is set to host four matches during the tournament, including Scotland's fixtures against Czech Republic on June 14 and against Croatia on June 22.

In April, UEFA signed off on plans allowing 12,000 spectators to attend Hampden for each of games, meaning the national stadium will be operating at about 25% capacity.

However, despite the reduced attendance, UEFA have been granted permission to use part of the south side park to facilitate their operations during the tournament, prompting a furious backlash from locals.

Sharing video of the converted site, Seven One Seven, a popular Pollokshaws Road grocery, commented: "Queens Park recreation ground being fenced off for an overflow car park for Euro matches at Hampden. I cannot find words to express the strength of my disapproval.

"Since when do people drive to football matches? Must another of our parks really be wrecked like this, and in early summer when the grass is full of wild flowers? It’s just horrid."

Similar feelings were vented on the Battlefield Community Project page, with one resident saying locals hadn't been consulted over the move. They commented: "This is the first I've heard of it, and it seems appalling to me that during a pandemic, a huge chunk of our outdoors space is being given over as a car park? And the ground will obviously be impacted for a long time after having had a month worth of cars going back and forth across it, not to mention the likelihood of increased littering etc."

Another member in the group added: "I am appalled that this is going ahead given the situation in Glasgow. I live near there feel even more vulnerable, while one user said: "That is crazy! You're right - that will take away a really important bit of green space for the community and presumably leave a mess behind!"

When asked for comment, Glasgow City Council confirmed to Glasgow Live that Queen's Park Recreation Ground is a council-owned site and as such they are able to grant permission for use of the space, as was the case during the summer Olympics in 2012 and throughout the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

They also advised that although they expect minimal damage in the area, UEFA will be expected to cover any costs of repairs.

A spokesman for the council said: “The council has given permission for UEFA to use a section of Queen’s Park Recreation Ground as a temporary car park as part of their plan for Hampden Park during Euro 2020.

“The car park will be set-up using temporary trackway to minimise any damage to the ground, but UEFA will still be expected to cover any repairs.

“Queen’s Park Recreation Ground was used successfully as a temporary car park during the 2012 Olympics football tournament and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
