Euro 2020 final: All you need to know about the referee for England v Italy

UEFA have confirmed that Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers will be taking charge of England’s Euro 2020 final against Italy on Sunday.

Assistant referees will be Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra with Spain’s Carlos del Cerro Grande the fourth official for England’s first major final in 55 years.

Kuipers started the tournament at Wembley as fourth official for the Three Lions’ opening game against Croatia.

Raheem Sterling’s second half winner set the tone for Gareth Southgate’s side as they went on to top group D and reach the knockout stages.

The Dutchman was also in charge of Denmark’s group stage match against Belgium and Spain’s 5-0 demolition of Slovakia.

He also officiated Denmark’s quarter-final victory over the Czech Republic and Kuipers is an experienced referee with plenty of UEFA finals already under his belt.

The 48-year-old has refereed two Europa League finals in 2013 and 2018, the 2014 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, the 2011 UEFA Super Cup final between Barcelona and Porto as well as the 2009 U21 European Championship final, which England lost to Germany.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be familiar with Kuipers as he refereed England’s U20 World Cup final in 2017, where the Everton striker scored the winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Venezuela.

For Italy, Marco Veratti claimed the Dutch referee swore at him during Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League semi-final second leg defeat to Manchester City after Angel Di Maria received a red card for pushing and kicking out at Fernandinho.

Aside from refereeing, Kuipers co-founded Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo Kuipers, which sponsors Formula One star Max Verstappen.
