Euro 2020: England V Ukraine - Bristol families divided on who to support

With England look to cement their place in the semi finals of Euro 2020, BristolLive has caught up with the families that have been divided by nationalities for the match against Ukraine.

Katya Fletcher is from Ukraine and is married to Matthew who is from England. The married couple live in Portishead with their twin boys and daughter.

"We asked the children about who they’ll support, and they said both teams," Katya said.

Katya said it was important for her to show the children how well Ukraine are doing in the Euros and that it’s possible for them to win.

Matthew, who is hoping England will progress on to the semis, said: "The family are divided over the overall result and in some ways, you could say it’s a win-win situation but it’s definitely not the case for me and anything other than an England win would be a complete disaster.”

Katya said she would be happy with any result and the children are hoping for a victory from both teams, but Matthew imagines a 2-0 victory to England.

Matthew said he would be “pretty gutted” if England lose but is ready to support Ukraine moving forward if England are knocked out.

Covid has elongated the time since Katya has seen her family and watching the Euros has been really helpful for her.

“I haven’t seen my family for two and a half years and I really miss my country, my friends, my family and the Ukrainian game has been a small connection for me to all these things”, Said Katya.

The Stadon Family: Vera, John, Vladimir, Maria and Lillia Stadon (Vera Stadon)

John and Vera Stadon from Mangotsfield are in a similar boat but the children are more divided.

Vera is hoping for a Ukrainian win while John is crossing his fingers for England.

Their 10-year-old daughter Lillia is ‘on the fence’ whilst 13-year-old Vladimir is supporting England and six-year-old Maria is all for Ukraine.

Maria highlighted her contempt for the England squad with her recent artwork declaring that ‘England are the worst and stroppy’.

As the most determined of the family, it may be better for the Stadon’s if Ukraine are victorious or who knows what else Maria may draw.
