England are not showing too many signs of slipping up in Group E, but if they do Switzerland and Slovenia remain in contention after both won at home.

Switzerland, who are the top seeds in the group but had a disastrous opening to their campaign after losing at home to England and then away in Slovenia, are now back on track to reach the finals in France after a third successive victory, despatching Estonia 3-0 in Lucerne, with the Basel defender Fabian Schär heading home the opening goal from a Xherdan Shaqiri cross, and Granit Xhaka doubling the advantage before a late third from Haris Seferovic.

Slovenia had the rather simpler task of seeing off the group’s whipping boys, San Marino, and were ahead inside 10 minutes through Josip Ilicic in Ljubljana. They added five more goals in the second half to complete a 6-0 victory that keeps them second behind England.

Slovakia remain the surprise leaders of Group C, their 3-0 win over Luxembourg ensuring they stay three points ahead of Spain, who defeated Ukraine 1-0 in Seville courtesy of the Juventus forward Álvaro Morata’s first-half strike. Belarus climb above Macedonia after coming from behind to beat them 2-1 in Skopje.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored both the goals for Sweden as they won 2-0 in Moldova to remain second in Group G, which Austria lead following their 5-0 victory in Liechtenstein, with Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic among the scorers.
