Eugenie Bouchard has withdrawn from the women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions at the US Open after suffering a locker-room accident that resulted in a head injury on Friday.
A statement from tournament director David Brewer issued Saturday afternoon confirmed the incident and said the severity of the injury will continue to be assessed by on-site medical personnel, who recommended that Bouchard withdraw from her doubles matches scheduled for that day.
Bouchard, the No25 seed in the women’s singles, is scheduled to face unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci in a fourth-round match on Sunday after Friday’s stirring 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3 win over Dominika Cibulkova. No decision has been made on whether she will remain in the singles as she continues with medical evaluation and treatment.
An update on her condition was expected later Saturday, Brewer said.
It’s the latest snag in a snake-bitten season for the Canadian ingénue, who climbed to No5 in the rankings last year after breakthrough runs to the Australian Open and French Open semi-finals and a runner-up finish at Wimbledon, but who has struggled to back up that success and entered the US Open having not won consecutive matches since March.
After making the quarter-finals at this year’s Australian Open, she crashed out in the first round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon as her ranking dropped as low as No26.
