The European Union on Thursday recommended that its member states reinstate an entry ban for travelers from Japan, because of the surge in novel coronavirus infections in the country.
Each of the member states has the authority to control their own borders, and will decide whether or not to actually ban entries.
The EU lifted travel restrictions from 14 countries including Japan in July. The list of countries for which travel restrictions can be lifted has been reviewed and updated periodically.
This time, the EU removed Japan from the seven countries that were on the list as of December.
Travelers from Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand continue to be allowed to travel into the EU.
