EU set to lift quarantine rules for fully vaccinated travellers from next month

Fully vaccinated Scots could be exempt from quarantine when travelling to the likes of Spain and France later this summer.

The EU launched its 'EU Digital Covid Certificate' today, which it hopes to implement for travel across the bloc from July 1.

Anyone who has received both jabs will not need to self-isolate at their chosen destinations under the proposals.

Travellers who are yet to receive both jabs will be able to provide evidence of a negative test or proof that they have recovered from the coronavirus.

It has been proposed that PCR tests must be taken 72 hours before travel, with rapid antigen tests taken 48 hours before.

Children of those who have been fully vaccinated will be exempt from the need to quarantine under the proposal.

Member states will be allowed to reintroduce travel restrictions if coronavirus situation ‘deteriorates rapidly’ or in countries where high prevalence of ‘variants of concern or interest’ - such as the so-called Indian variant - have been reported.

The EU will also consider other nations, including the UK, to be invited to take part in the scheme.

Didier Reynders. European Commissioner for Justice, said: “The last weeks have brought a continues downward trend in infection numbers, showing the success of the vaccination campaigns across the EU.

“In parallel, we are also encouraging affordable and widely available testing possibilities. In this context, member states are now slowly lifting Covid-19 restrictions both domestically and regarding travel.

“Today, we are proposing that member states coordinate this gradual lifting of free movement restrictions, taking into account our new common tool: the EU Digital Covid Certificate.

“We now expect member states to make best use of this instrument and the recommendation to allow everyone to move freely and safely again.”

Scots have been urged not to travel to amber and red list countries under the Scottish Government's traffic light system on international travel (Garry F McHarg Daily Record)

The Scottish Government recently introduced a traffic light system on international travel out of Scotland.

Countries have been added to the green, amber and red lists in relation to their ongoing coronavirus situation.

Portugal is the only EU country on the green list, which means travellers must take a Covid test before after travel back into Scotland, with no need to quarantine on arrival.

Scots have been urged not to travel to amber and red list countries as public health experts grow concerned over new strains of the virus.
