EU referendum: Victoria Beckham hits back at Leave.EU campaign for misrepresenting stance

Victoria Beckham has criticised the Leave.EU group for “putting a spin” on a quote she gave about Europe 20 years ago.

On Tuesday, David Beckham came out in favour of Britain remaining in the European Union. In an Instagram post, he touched on his time living in various European cities throughout his footballing career and said: “For our children and their children we should be facing the problems of the world together and not alone.”

Shortly after, the campaign group Leave.EU shared a quote given by his wife Victoria in 1996 and added "should've listened to the missus, David".

The 1996 quote, given to the Spectator when Victoria, now 42, was better known as Posh Spice, said: “The Euro bureaucrats are destroying every bit of national identity and individuality. We must keep our national individuality.”

The fashion designer has now criticised the Leave.EU campaign for “putting a spin” on the quote. She explained it was in reference to potentially joining the euro and losing the pound. She confirmed her stance on Thursday's referendum was the same as her husband’s and she supports the remain campaign.

“In response to the leave.eu campaign who have today tried to put a spin on quotes made 20 years ago about keeping or losing the pound, I have to say strongly my comments were not about this referendum and should not be misused in this way!” she wrote on Instagram.

“I believe in my country, I believe in a future for my children where we are stronger together and I support the remain campaign.”

In response, Leave.EU issued a press release saying: "She was absolutely clear. We quoted her in her own words on the EU, seems that she can also Bend the facts like Beckham."
