EU referendum: On-the-day Ipsos MORI poll gives Remain eight point lead

A second “on the day” poll of voters has shown Remain winning the EU referendum.

Ipsos MORI found 54 per cent of people backing Remain and 46 per cent of people backing Leave.

The eight point lead against Brexit comes after a YouGov recontact survey found a slightly narrower result with 52 per cent backing Remain and 48 per cent backing Leave.

Neither survey is a genuine “exit poll” of the type that correctly called the nuances of the 2015 general election result in May last year and in 2010.

However, both join mounting evidence that Remain may have won the vote amid a huge turnout surge.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage appeared to concede the result before the first local authority’s results were even in.

The value of the pound went above $1.50 and hit a 2016 high following the two polls.

The first official results, from the North East of England, are expected before midnight on polling day.

Unless it is clear the result should become increasingly clear by around 3am when the majority of seats start to declare.
