EU Leaders Call For Sanctions Against Iran And Israeli Settlers

European Union flags fly outside the European Commission in Brussels

European foreign leaders are calling for sanctions against Iran and Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. The EU Foreign Affairs Council is set to discuss this matter, with EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell expressing hope for a consensus on implementing a comprehensive package of sanctions against Iran.

The US has already expanded sanctions on Iran following Iran's launch of over 300 missiles and drones towards Israel in retaliation for a suspected Israeli airstrike on its consulate in Damascus.

Borrell also highlighted the need to consider sanctions against violent settlers in the West Bank. Incidents of violence by Israeli settlers and troops in the West Bank have escalated during Israel's conflict in Gaza, leading to additional sanctions by both the US and EU.

Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized the importance of not having double standards when it comes to sanctions, suggesting that those who arm and support violent settlers should also face consequences. The minister stressed the need to prevent Palestinians from being displaced without the means to defend themselves.

Swedish foreign minister Tobias Billstrom underscored the need to support Israel in light of the recent Iranian attack, condemning the aggression. Billstrom also emphasized the importance of curbing the proliferation of drones manufactured in Iran and including Iranian proxies in the sanctions.
