EU elections, Brexit and fighting corruption: Talking Europe highlights (part 1)

As Europe goes off on its summer holidays, we're looking back on some of the big events we reported on in the last few months. The main event of early 2019 was the elections to the European Parliament, which saw record turnout. During the campaign, our team travelled around Europe to meet some of the people involved in the key stories in their own countries. We look back at our reports, as well as our interviews with key European figures.

We revisit the story of Hungary's so-called "Slave Law", a major campaign issue for Hungarians. We hear from a 19-year-old woman who spoke out against the reforms and from the government spokesman defending them.

In Belgium, former Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt tells us how he sees the path ahead on migration amid widespread Euroscepticism.

EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager gives us her take on gender equality at the heart of the EU.

We learn more about the Romanian prosecutor Laura Codruta Kövesi, who's earned a reputation at home as an anti-corruption giant-killer, and who is now in the frame to become the first head of the EU's new Public Prosecutor's Office.

Finally, whether the UK leaves the EU with or without a Brexit deal later this year is still unclear. The issue remains a matter of great concern for the people we met in Northern Ireland and Ireland.
