EU Digital Covid cert to be updated as Irish sunseekers begin planning 2022 holidays

The EU Digital Covid Certificate will be updated to include information about booster vaccines.

Deputy Alan Farrell of Fine Gael says that every cert will be updated by January 15 with a person's vaccination status of either one dose, two dose or boostered.

As of Tuesday morning, Ireland has administered 2,133,249 booster vaccines, with the Digital Covid Cert a requirement to enter a number of countries across the continent.

In the coming year, those who wish to travel abroad will likely need a booster to make their Covid certificate valid.

However, there was a change announced on Wednesday involving how someone can get back in to Ireland.

Previously, vaccinated or recovered people travelling into Ireland would have to present a negative antigen test taken no more than 48 hours before they arrive or a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

If they weren't able to do that, they weren't getting in. It was in place to stop the spread of the Omicron variant.

As that variant is now dominant, the rule was scrapped by officials earlier today.

Since being discovered in November, Omicron has quickly emerged as the dominant coronavirus variant across the globe.

That includes in Ireland, where it is estimated that 96% of new daily cases are as a result of the strain.

While a lot remains unknown about the latest strain of Covid, experts have found that symptoms of Omicron are quite different from the classic signs of coronavirus.

According to the latest HSE advice, the three main symptoms of Covid are:

  • fever (high temperature - 38 degrees Celsius or above) - including having chills.
  • dry cough.
  • fatigue (tiredness)

It is widely accepted that a loss of taste or smell is also a sign of Covid.

The new variant show signs of being more similar to a common cold, with symptoms described as “mild” by some patients and doctors.

However, there are some lesser-known signs of Omicron appearing on the skin, lips and nails that patients should seek urgent medical attention for.
