Etiquette experts Debrett's poke fun at Liz Truss with advice about resigning gracefully

Liz Truss's premiership is hanging on by a thread - for now. Following another tumultuous day in the Commons, the Prime Minister is facing increasing pressure to resign. Now, Debrett's has seemingly joined calls to see Truss exit Downing Street, as the etiquette experts have shared an interesting tweet - and it is bad news for Truss.

In an aptly-timed tweet posted shortly before 8.30pm on Wednesday, Debrett's issued resignation advice. The self-proclaimed "publisher and authority on social and interpersonal skills" said: "Etiquette Tip of the Day: Resignations. For most of us, a good resignation is all about not burning bridges. Nobody knows exactly where their career will lead, and it is sensible to avoid leaving a trail of bad feeling and recrimination. #ETOTD "

The tweet followed a day of chaos after Wednesday saw more resignations, U-turns and what has been described as the most chaotic scenes ever witnessed in the Commons voting lobbies - after a revolt exploded minutes before last night's vote on fracking.

People were quick to draw the connection between yesterday's events and Debrett's tweet, with many praising the publisher for poking fun at Truss.

One quote retweet read: "Very timely advice. Not that this bunch of bridge-burners will listen."

Another said: "There’s going to be a riot in the clubs on Pall Mall if this continues."

And a third added: "Debrett's is a useful account to follow, but it's especially useful when Britain is an omnishambles."

While someone else tweeted: "When Debretts are trolling the Government." A second agreed: "Debrett’s are subtweeting the PM now." Meanwhile other fans simply commented "useful advice" and "absolutely love to see it."

Whether Truss takes Debrett's advice remains to be seen. Conservative MP Simon Hoare believes Thursday and Friday are "crunch days".

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said: "Can the ship be turned around? Yes. But I think there’s about 12 hours to do it."

He added: "I think today and tomorrow are crunch days. I have never known – OK, I’ve only been an MP for seven years – but a growing sense of pessimism in all wings of the Tory party.

"Usually it’s one or the other, but to have it across the party should be ringing alarm bells in both Number 10 and Number 11."

But Conservative MP Crispin Blunt said Liz Truss ’s position is "wholly untenable".

Speaking of Truss' position as it stands this morning, in conversation with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said: "Wholly untenable. And if she doesn’t understand that then I would be astonished.

"But one of the qualities she has shown is a lack of self-knowledge to this whole process, because it ought to have been clear that she did not have the capacity to lead our party and I don’t think she should have put herself up for the leadership in the first place.

"All of that has now been confirmed. It’s plain what is required. We need to affect a change, frankly, today, in order to stop this shambles and give our country the governance it needs under our constitution."
