Etiquette expert says we all butter bread wrong - but some say he's 'barbaric'

One of life's most simple pleasures is a slice of freshly baked bread slathered with butter - but did you know you've might have been making and eating it wrong your entire life?

You might think that there's only one way to butter a slice of bread, but according to an etiquette expert on TikTok, there's actually a very specific process you should be going through in order to appear truly classy.

Apwasi, who posts under the username @apwasiwine, has claimed that when presented with a bread basket in a restaurant, you should never butter the whole slice at once - and instead, you should break the bread into smaller, bitesize pieces and butter them individually.

He said: "Many people will take the entire piece of bread and butter it on their plate. Practical, certainly, but in terms of etiquette, it's incorrect.

"Take the entire piece of butter and place it onto your plate. This is where the saying comes from, breaking bread. You break the bread into small pieces, mouth-sized.

"Butter it, and there you go. Perfect!"

The expert says we should actually be breaking our bread into small chunks before buttering (@apwasiwine/TIKTOK)

The expert's video has been viewed over 4.4 million times, but his tip has divided the opinion of the 4,500 people who left comments - as some have branded it "barbaric".

One person said: "How to waste time doing something desperately simple."

While another added: "The extra steps seem ridiculous. Putting the butter on the plate, ripping it into bite-size pieces. And ripping the bread apart seems barbaric."

And a third wrote: "You have to draw the line somewhere ... This doesn’t even make sense, it looks like it made more mess."

But other commenters were quick to defend Apwasi from criticism, as they claimed his tips have been helpful to them and give an interesting insight into how other people live.

Someone said: "Why are people hating so much? He's showing what other people do, and it's great information. It's not a waste of time."

As someone else agreed, writing: "I like these tips, it’s an interesting new perspective. I appreciate the time taken for these videos."

While another posted: "Makes me feel like a real lady when I follow your tips! Love your videos!"
