Ethiopian PM calls on citizens to fight Tigray rebels

EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for all eligible citizens to join the army, as fighting rages against Tigrayan rebels in several regions. The call represents a further crumbling of the unilateral ceasefire Abiy's government declared two months ago. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) retook most of Tigray in June and have since pushed into the neighbouring Afar and Amhara regions.

Also in this edition, Zambian President Edgar Lungu faces a tough contest in upcoming elections, taking on his main rival Hakainde Hichilema. The vote comes amid the country's worst economic performance in decades, with the national debt at $13 billion and more than half the population living in poverty. Lungu is campaigning on infrastructure investments and increased state control of mining, but the opposition says his borrowing is unsustainable.

Finally, families in Cameroon are being left stranded and torn apart by increasing land disputes.
