Ethical leadership crucial in shaping successful organizations, study reveals

Leaders should model desired behaviors

When was the last time you turned on the news or tapped a news notification on your phone and saw yet another corporate scandal? It's disheartening, isn't it? These scandals have become so commonplace that we almost expect them. But as a current or aspiring leader, you have the power to make a difference. You can set the tone of your organization and be an ethically conscious leader.

By modeling the behaviors you wish to see exemplified in your teams, you can change the narrative and be respected by industry peers, employees, leadership teams, and customers alike. It's in your hands to shape your personal brand as a principled leader who will not sacrifice morals for temporary personal gratification.

You have a responsibility to establish your own code of conduct because people will look up to you as a role model. Employees across the organization will observe your behavior, work ethic, leadership style, and character. When they see leaders who maintain high standards and live by their own ethics, they are more likely to have respect and admiration for them. This, in turn, leads to higher levels of engagement and a positive reputation for the company.

A 2021 study published in the National Library of Medicine highlighted the impact of ethical and moral leadership in the workforce. It emphasized that ethical leaders are moral role models who set clear ethical standards and create a moral environment in the workplace. This fosters trust and psychological safety among followers.

To be an ethical leader, there are eight ethics that you should consider incorporating into your own rulebook this year:

1. Consistency: Be consistent and transparent in your communication with everyone. Consistency builds trust over time, and people assess your character based on repeated actions.

2. Integrity: Always do the right thing, even when faced with difficult decisions or external pressures. Losing your integrity erodes confidence in your leadership.

3. Respect: Treat all team members with dignity, value their contributions and perspectives, and respect their well-being and time. Mutual respect is essential in the workplace.

4. Accountability: Own up to your mistakes. Being accountable shows honesty and a willingness to learn and improve. It also ensures you are not bending the rules for personal gain.

5. Fairness: Strive to create a level playing field where everyone's voice is heard and their rights are respected. Speak up when others are being treated unfairly.

6. Empathy: Show genuine care for your team members by putting yourself in their shoes, actively listening, and considering the impact of your actions and words.

7. Empowerment: As a leader, your goal should be to create more leaders within your team. Empower your team members to take accountability, responsibility, and excel in their performance.

8. Sustainability: Take responsibility for contributing to a greener future. Set an example through daily practices, company-wide policies, and initiatives. Sustainability is not only good for the planet but also attracts and retains talent, particularly among the younger generations.

By prioritizing these eight ethics, you can lead with integrity, adhere to your values and those of your organization, and model the behaviors you want to see in your team. As an ethical leader, you have the power to create a positive and inspiring work environment where trust, respect, and accountability thrive.
