Ethan Laird makes Manchester United 'problem position' statement as Hannibal steps up again

Manchester United starlets continue to light up the Championship this season with four players in action for their respective clubs over the latest matchday.

Hannibal Mejbri got things underway when starting and playing 76 minutes for play-off chasing Birmingham City in their statement win against Reading on Friday night. He was followed by three more United representatives in 3pm kick-offs on Saturday afternoon.

However, others further down the pyramid saw their matches cancelled due to sub-zero temperatures and frozen pitches. Here is our round-up with those currently away from Old Trafford on loan.

Amad Diallo (Sunderland)

Despite initially struggling to make his mark, Amad started for the eighth Championship game running against Hull City on Saturday afternoon. He played 85 minutes in that 1-1 draw. After netting five goals in his last seven matches, the Ivorian was not on target this time around, but played his part as ten-man Sunderland picked up a useful point.

Alvaro Fernandez (Preston)

Saturday afternoon saw Alvaro Fernandez and his Preston teammates head to QPR where they met a familiar face in Ethan Laird for the opposition. It was Laird who earned bragging rights with a 1-0 victory, although Fernandez did go close to opening the scoring himself before Jimmy Dunne settled the scores for the Londoners at Loftus Road.

Ethan Laird (QPR)

United want to sign a new right-back to provide competition for returning World Cup player Diogo Dalot and their Academy graduate, Laird, continues to shine in the Championship once again this season. But will the club recall him in the winter market?

Laird played the full game against Preston and Fernandez as his manager, Neil Critchley, pressed forward his claims to continue working with the United prospect.

Speaking post-match, he said: "I'm sure Manchester United will be happy with Ethan and the way he's been playing with his development. My aim is to carry that on... I see myself as someone who can coach players to improve in the team they are playing in."

Laird has made 19 appearances in the Championship this season with one goal and two assists. QPR moved into the play-off spots when picking up three points on Saturday afternoon.

Hannibal Mejbri (Birmingham City)

Birmingham appeared to be coasting to victory over Reading on Friday night when they stormed into a 3-0 lead at St. Andrew's Stadium. Troy Deeney led the way with two goals as ex-United player Tahith Chong also netted for the first time this season. He was assisted by Hannibal after 36 minutes.

With three points seemingly in the bag, at that point, Birmingham went through the mill to hold out for their win as Reading hit back through Lucas Joao and Tom Ince. But it proved too little, too late.
