Eternal's Kelle Bryan says magazine refused to put her black girl band on cover

Eternal star Kelle Bryan says one magazine refused to put her black girl band on the cover.

After similar claims were made by Mis-Teeq's Sabrina Washington, Kelle spoke about her own experiences on today's Loose Women.

Kelle was one quarter of R&B girl group Eternal, formed in 1992 with fellow black women Easther and Vernie Bennett, and white woman Louise Redknapp.

Opening up on the show to Andrea McLean, Denise Welch and Jane Moore, Kelle said she was told that "black women don't sell magazines".

When asked if she could relate to what Sabrina had said, Kelle told her co-stars: "Unfortunately yes, when I was in a band we'd just had a number one record and were the biggest R&B group in the UK at the time and were told by a magazine we couldn't be on the front cover."

Kelle says her manager questioned the magazine.

"They basically came back and said at the time that black people don't sell magazines," she said.

"It is something that I stand in solidarity with Sabrina, because it's something that was definitely innate at the time."

Kelle was asked if things have changed.

She said: "Unfortunately not so much, I just recently featured in a magazine and I was on page 100 and something, literally the page before the back, and it was a double page spread granted, but a white celebrity was on the front."

Kelle says she did some research to find out if the magazine had ever featured a black woman on the cover and said she couldn't find any examples.

"So sadly it is something that still happens today," she told the panel.

She added: "It needs to change from the top down, the editors, the photographers, the directors, they all need to change because if they do the influence will change."

She said that magazines need to "reflect other members of society" because everyone buys magazines.

Denise chipped in: "Those people saying black women don't sell magazines, then why would black women buy those magazines?"

She added: "I've been in this industry for 42 years now and don't remember ever being directed in television or theatre by a black director.

"I don't think I've ever done a photoshoot with a black photographer, but then if they don't put black people on the magazines why would they hire a black photographer?

"I've never noticed it before and I'm ashamed that I haven't."

* Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV
