Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas Urges U.S. Support For Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Meloni and Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob meet in Rome

As European leaders increase their defense spending and industry capacity amid uncertain U.S. support for Ukraine, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has emerged as a prominent figure in the fight against Russian aggression. At 46, Kallas is Estonia's first female prime minister and is known for her tough stance on Russia, earning her the nickname of 'eating Russians for breakfast' by some critics.

Despite facing a warrant for her arrest issued by Russia's interior minister earlier this year, Kallas remains steadfast in her efforts to defend Estonia and support Ukraine. In response to critics questioning her tough approach towards Putin, Kallas emphasized the severity of Putin's actions and the need to stand firm against Russian aggression.

Estonia, located on the front line of NATO with a border shared with Russia, allocates a significant portion of its GDP towards defense, with a portion dedicated to supporting Ukraine in its conflict against Russia. Kallas highlighted the importance of cybersecurity, particularly in preventing cyberattacks like those experienced in 2007 when Estonia was targeted by massive cyber campaigns.

Referring to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a 'shadow war,' Kallas warned against negotiating with Russia on their terms, emphasizing the potential consequences of appeasing aggressors. Drawing from her personal history of her family's experience in a Soviet prison camp, Kallas underscored the lasting impact of conflicts and the importance of learning from history to prevent future aggression.

Kallas called on the U.S. to continue supporting Ukraine and urged Congress to provide additional funding to counter Russian influence. She emphasized the global implications of a Russian victory in Ukraine, warning of potential conflicts in other regions if aggression is not met with resistance.

With her unwavering commitment to defending Estonia and supporting Ukraine, Kaja Kallas stands as a strong voice against Russian aggression and a proponent of international cooperation to maintain peace and security.
