Estimated 3,000 people at illegal rave in Banwen, Neath Port Talbot

Up to 3,000 people from all over the UK have attended an illegal rave in Neath Port Talbot which remained ongoing on Sunday afternoon.

Residents of Banwen have complained of excessive noise, which was reportedly heard up to 10 miles away, as well as alleged drug-taking, illegal parking, and people urinating and vomiting in front of houses.

Chief superintendent Simon Belcher, of South Wales Police said: “This type of illegal gathering is totally unacceptable and we are aware of the concerns it is causing for the local community.

“I would like to again remind people of their obligations under the current coronavirus legislation and the overarching goal for everyone to take personal responsibility by following Welsh Government regulations to keep Wales safe."

He added: “It has been estimated there are up to 3,000 people at the gathering who have apparently travelled from across the UK and we are looking at all pieces of legislation as to what action can be undertaken safely.

“Unlawfully parked cars will be dealt with and people who continue, despite our advice, to try and attend this illegal event area being turned away.”

He said roads policing officers and a police helicopter were in attendance.

The event comes on the day Wales recorded its steepest rise in new coronavirus cases for at least a week while a plane-load of passengers who flew into Cardiff have all been ordered to self-isolate following seven confirmed cases among passengers.
