If the daily number of vaccinations nationwide holds at the current 1.2 million, it is estimated that 40% of the population will have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine by Aug. 30, a researcher at Nomura Research Institute told Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Saturday.
In a meeting at the prime minister's official residence, Shinichiro Umeya, the head of the Center for Strategic Management and Innovation at Nomura Research Institute provided a forecast regarding the progress of vaccinations against COVID-19.
According to the institute's estimates, if the workplace inoculation program is taken into account, the 40% threshold could be achieved by Aug. 21.
Based on several case examples abroad, the institute found that the number of new coronavirus cases tends to decrease when 40% of the population has been fully vaccinated.
