Esther Rantzen wants That's Life revival due to 'rising number of internet scams'

Esther Rantzen wants the BBC to revive her show That’s Life to help deal with the rising number of internet scams.

The TV host, 80, said: “I had two attempts in emails to me, one purportedly from Royal Mail.

“It said they’d tried to deliver a parcel and if I clicked on a link I’d be able to arrange another delivery and know how much, etc.

"The second was a really genuine looking reminder that my Netflix membership was up for renewal and all I had to do was click on a link. There was also a news story on how many scams take advantage of Covid.”

Esther added on her podcast That’s After Life: “I think it’s a shame really that we haven’t found ways of sorting this out.

“If only That’s Life were on the air right now.”

Esther also pointed out: "I think all of us are probably educated to not give any kind of details over the phone be it passcodes or anything else but the other thing I got through my internet."

That’s Life! ran for 21 years, from 1973 till 1994, and it dealt with consumer issues, combined serious investigations with satire.

There have been rumours of the show coming back in the past but the closest thing was Rantzen appearing elsewhere to discuss consumer issues.

Presenting duo Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford’s consumer show, Do The Right Thing was on Channel 5 for several years and featured Rantzen in 2019.

At the time of joining Rantzen said: “And for any conmen out there, watch out, the teeth are still as sharp as ever!”
