Esther McVey is OUT of the running to be next Prime Minister after coming bottom of the pile in embarrassing first round of voting

Esther McVey has been knocked out of the contest to become the next Tory leader and Prime Minister of the country.

The Liverpool-born MP for Tatton was one of a number of candidates who had put themselves forward for selection.

But her campaign fell embarrassingly at the first hurdle as she didn't get the required number of MPs backing her to progress to the next round of the contest - and actually came bottom of the pile.

In total 313 Tory MPs took place in today's first ballot.

Ms McVey was only able to scrabble together the support of nine MPs - with frontrunner Boris Johnson amassing a whopping 114 MP votes.

It is being reported that her paltry effort is the worst ever performance in the history of Tory leadership bids - of those who have competed in the first round of voting.

Ms McVey was kicked out of the campaign along with rival candidates Mark Harper and Andrea Leadsom who gained the support of 10 and 11 MPs resepectively.

Mr Johnson will be joined in the next round of voting by fellow candidates Michael Gove (37), Matt Hancock (20), Jeremy Hunt (43), Sajid Javid (23) and Dominic Raab (27).

Ms McVey's stuttering campaign was mired in controversy as she backed parents over withdrawing children from LGBT school lessons, was involved in a public row with TV presenter Lorraine Kelly and was revealed to have spent nearly £9,000 on a personal photographer.

Tory MPs will continue to whittle down the number of candidates until only two remain - who will face off for the votes from 160,000 Tory members.

Speaking after she came bottom of the pile, Ms McVey said she had been proud to represent 'blue collar conservatism.'
