Esther McVey booted out of Tory leadership race in first round of voting

has been booted out of the Tory leadership contest after receiving the fewest amount of votes in the first ballot.

The former Work and Pensions minister was first to be out of the running with 9 votes, closely followed by Mark Harper, 10, and Andrea Leadsom , 11.

Boris Johnson topped the first poll with 114 votes, well ahead of foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt with 43.

Michael Gove, Dominic Raab, Sajid Javid, Matt Hancock and Rory Stewart also remain in the race for No10 to replace Theresa May.

The latter scraped through the first round with 19 votes despite his well-received leadership campaign launch on Tuesday.

He tweeted: ''THANK YOU - to all my colleagues who voted for me. We can win this. Realism, action, unity, trust. Thank you.''

Boris Johnson also tweeted: ''Thank you to my friends and colleagues in the Conservative & Unionist Party for your support. I am delighted to win the first ballot, but we have a long way to go.''

While Matt Hancock, who had 20 votes, posted: ''Thanks so much for the fantastic support - terrific to have more votes from colleagues than I could have hoped for £letsmoveforward.''

It comes after McVey was embroiled in a row with Scottish TV host Lorraine Kelly .

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, the former presenter was snubbed by her old colleague during an excruciating exchange.

Afterwards McVey claimed that the pair’s feud stemmed from her promotion on GMTV to host with Eamonn Holmes.

Asked about what went on between the pair, she said: “Well we used to share a dressing room, and she used to be on the programme afterwards, and obviously she used to be partnered with Eamonn Holmes, then I was promoted to be partnering with Eamonn Holmes.

"But, she's great and it was a great show, and I can't believe it, I think it was 20 years ago I did that show, but never mind, it was really good at the time, it was really good fun."

The second round is expected to take place on the 18th of June with contenders needing 33 votes to stay in the race.
