Esther McVey admits she's taken marijuana 'like anybody else at university' on Good Morning Britain

Esther McVey told how she had marijuana 'like anybody else at university' on GMB this morning.

After Michael Gove revealed he'd taken cocaine in the past, Piers asked Esther if she'd ever dabbled in drugs.

Esther said: "I've tried blow, pot, marijuana, like anybody else at university I've tried it.

"This is the age of transparency and I'll admit I've tried it."

Susanna asked if she had thought about legalising the drug, if she was successful in becoming Tory leader.

Esther said: "Yes I've tried it - I haven't looked at it to be legalised, I don't want to see a potential gateway to other drugs.

"I know there will be a charter into what we should be doing, but I'm not looking to change anything."

Piers also questioned Esther about Universal Credi t and said he found it extraordinary that people had to use food banks in this country.

And she said: "Where it hasn't worked for people I do apologise.

"It's a scandal that anyone in this country has to use a food bank.

"We have to look at why people use them though, they could be addicted to drugs or alcohol and that's why they have no money for food."

As the interview ended Piers asked Esther if she'd ever had elocution lessons to "de-Scouse" herself.

And she admitted: "At school I have, but not in the last 20 years and I have been in London for over 20 years now."

*GMB continues at 6am on ITV tomorrow
