Ester McVey claims she will be 'on the side' of working class people

Esther McVey has claimed she will be "on the side" of the working class while starting her bid for Tory leadership.

The Liverpool-born politician , known for slashing benefits and championing controversial policies like the Bedroom Tax and Universal Credit, also said she would be targeting public sector works and low earners as she works to take Theresa May's job.

After confirming that she would be bidding for the job as May prepares to name a departure date, McVey hosted an event for her Blue Collar Conservatives when she made the laughable comments.

According to Mirror Online , the event was attended by more than a dozen Tory MPs who McVey told she would cut taxes, but didn't say which ones,  and slash £7billion from the foreign aid budget and spend it on school and police while refusing to match Labour's pledge to hire 10,000 police officers.

The politician - reviled in much of Merseyside - also demanded Brexit happens deal or no deal on October 31, no matter how damaging for business.

And she refused to rule out a pact with Nigel Farage's Brexit Party, telling the Telegraph: "Nigel Farage is a tour de force. He has changed the narrative. He has caught the mood of the moment."

Ms McVey added the next leader of the Tories "has to be a Brexiteer because it has to be somebody who believes in Brexit."

The former Work and Pensions Secretary, who has already announced she is running for leadership , condemned the leadership of Theresa May.#

“Our failure to deliver Brexit has left many feeling demoralised, with no obvious light at the end of the tunnel," she said.

“We stand on the brink of an abyss - of the most destructive socialist government ever.”

The former TV presenter, who was ousted as an MP by furious Merseyside voters in 2015 before winning safe seat Tatton in 2017, admitted working class voters are "not returning to us".

She added: "We know a majority of these voters voted to leave the EU. And on this we have broken their trust.

"To win that trust back we must only not just deliver what we promised but we must be prepared to have a radical Conservative agenda to show we are on their side.”

Vowing to tour Britain and appear in "a pub near you" she went on: “This must include the public sector workers. They are not separate or out of our reach."
