Esso, BP, Shell and more petrol stations remove £30 pump limit

Around 400 petrol stations are removing the £30 limit on petrol as panic buying begins to slow down following an HGV driver shortage last week.

EG Group, which runs stations in partnership with Esso, BP and Shell, said a “significant improvement in fuel availability” has allowed the limit to be scrapped, The Mirror reports

The £30 cap had been introduced by the Company on September 24 to stop drivers hoarding petrol through the shortage.

In a statement, an EG Group spokesperson said: “Following a significant improvement in fuel availability at our sites, with customer purchasing behaviour returning to normal levels in the majority of locations, we are pleased to confirm that we can now remove the £30 cap on buying fuel.

“That said, we still continue to experience some challenges, primarily in our locations in the south and the south-east but following the actions from the government to secure additional drivers from the military this week, we expect availability issues easing in the coming days.”

The statement comes as 200 military personnel-including 100 HGV driver-have begun working to help ease supply issues as part of the Ministry of Defence’s plan to provide “temporary” support.

Petrol prices have hit an 8-year-high in light of the panic buying, with the average price shooting up to 136.1p a litre.

This is the highest level for petrol since September 2013, where the price of a litre of was 136.9p. Diesel has also risen to its highest price since the same year, at an average price of 139.2p per litre.

Petrol groups and the Government are continuing to urge drivers not to panic buy, as there is enough fuel to go around.
