Firefighters have rushed to tackle a “large incident” in Essex, following reports of a “cloud of fumes” coming from an industrial cylinder.

Residents of the town of West Thurrock are being urged to stay inside with “doors and windows closed” as a 100 metre exclusion zone remains in place at the scene.

The cordon is centred around Stoneness Road, with several surrounding roads closed, as emergency services continue to “manage the incident” which was first reported at around 4.20pm.

In a later statement at 6.30pm, the serves said firefighters are continuing to work alongside other emergency services at the scene.

“The 100 metre exclusion zone remains in place along with road closures in the area," the update said.

“Please avoid the area. If you live nearby, stay inside and close all windows and doors.”

The service earlier said control operators had received reports of a “cloud of fumes” following a reaction involving an industrial cylinder this afternoon.

Six fire engines are on the scene along with a hazardous materials unit (Hazmat).
