Essex chemical incident: Hazmat teams deployed as cloud of fumes spreads in West Thurrock

Emergency services have raced to the scene of a chemical incident after fumes began to spew from an industrial cylinder in West Thurrock, Essex

Locals are being told to keep their doors and windows closed and a 100m exclusion zone has been set up as a hazmat team works to clear the results of the chemical reaction.

In a statement Essex Fire, who were called to the scene at around 4:20pm, said: “Emergency services are working together at the scene.

"Firefighters are using a hazardous materials unit as part of work to establish the chemicals involved.

"A 100 metre exclusion zone has been set up, as is standard for incidents of this type".

The spokesperson added: "Please avoid the area. If you live nearby, stay inside and close all windows and doors".
