Essex accent named as sexiest in the UK

Essex has been voted the sexiest accent in the UK.

People with the Essex twang are considered to have a more desirable accent than the Northern Irish, Glaswegians or those who speak with Queen’s English, a poll by travel company Big 7 Travel revealed.

Olly Murs and the cast of The Only Way is Essex can now claim to have the sexiest accent, according to data gathered from the company's social audience of 1.5 million.

Manchester beat its neighbour Liverpool, with the Mancunian and Scouse accent coming in fifth and sixth respectively.

Top 10 sexiest UK accents ranked

1. Essex
2. Northern Irish
3. Glaswegian
4. Queen's English
5. Mancunian
6. Scouse
7. Geordie
8. South Welsh Valleys
9. Yorkshire
10. Cockney

The Brummie accent came in last place meaning people with the Birmingham twang were deemed to have the least attractive accent.

The Hull accent ranked 48th followed by the Gloucestershire, or “West Country dialect” in 49th.

However, none of English accents made the top ten globally in a separate survey from the travel company, although Scotland came in sixth.

The New Zealand accent topped the charts, followed by South African and then Irish, after Big 7 Travel’s gave its users a month to vote for their favourite accents in April.

“Queen’s English” – described as “clear, clipped and completely posh” – fell just outside the top ten at number 12, while Liverpool’s “highly distinctive” Scouse accent was awarded a place of its own at number 32.
