Essendon player Conor McKenna has tested negative to coronavirus on Tuesday, after returning positive test results to the virus over the weekend.
McKenna had an irregular test result on Friday before testing positive on Saturday.
He said he was unsure what the most recent negative test result meant for his quarantine and training arrangements.
The ABC understands he will be tested again on Wednesday before any decision is made on when he can rejoin his teammates for training and matches.
In a statement, the Essendon Football Club confirmed Tuesday's negative result.
"It has also been re-confirmed that the two swab tests taken on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 were both positive results," the club said.
"The club will work with relevant medical experts over the coming days to further understand these results."
The positive test on Saturday triggered an investigation by Victorian health authorities and the cancellation of Sunday's scheduled match between Essendon and Melbourne.
McKenna has been in quarantine since the positive test result on Saturday.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) concluded that just one of McKenna's training teammates, James Stewart, would need to self-quarantine for 14 days.
Stewart was McKenna's wrestling partner during a session last Friday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen said Stewart was the only teammate who had the "reasonably prolonged" exposure which defines a close contact.
"A single tackle, a single touch point of contact is not a high risk of transmission from a player to another player in the same way as we're not seeing the same person who gave you your coffee this morning getting it from you," Dr van Diemen said.
"So single touch points like that are not high risk. If that was the case we would have seen huge amounts more of community transmission."
She said there was no indication at that point in time that McKenna's first test was a false positive.
The Bombers' fourth-round match this Saturday is already set to go ahead, after its opponent Carlton said it was satisfied the response to the positive test had created "a safe environment for a return to play".
