Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell is isolating after returning a positive COVID-19 test.

Campbell — who is fully vaccinated — tested positive on Tuesday morning after developing "very mild symptoms" on Monday.

The Bombers released a media statement saying Campbell had not attended the club's base near Melbourne Airport since last Wednesday.

He has had no direct contact with members of the club's football program, with off-season training to continue "as normal".

"I experienced very mild symptoms on Monday afternoon and out of caution, got tested which has since returned a positive result," Campbell said in the Bombers' statement.

"My family and I are now isolating as we await all results.

"We've seen similar examples with other clubs in recent days, and it is a reminder of the importance of being vaccinated and getting tested as soon as symptoms present themselves.

"These measures in our community are in place for a reason as life returns to some form of normal for us all, and it is our shared responsibility to follow the advice in place from health and medical officials."

Last week, Hawthorn confirmed AFL player Finn Maginness had tested positive to COVID-19.

Carlton also had a positive case, with a fully vaccinated member of its AFLW program self-isolating.

The Blues have since been dealing with the news of AFL player Liam Jones's retirement after he reportedly refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The club said Jones had made the decision to retire for "personal reasons".
