ESPN updates its 2021 college football recruiting class rankings. What does it say about Ohio State?

If you follow our site, you know we are heavy on coverage of recruiting rankings using 247Sports. But that’s obviously not the only recruiting service out there. A few of the others include Rivals, Bleacher Report, and ESPN.

It’s the last of those three that just updated its most recent team recruiting rankings (subscription required), and there’s not much of a change for Ohio State. It remains the No. 1 overall class for 2021 according to the worldwide leader in sports programming, and for good reason.

Things have slowed down considerably with the recruiting news for Ohio State, but boy did it have one whale of a two-month period in March and April to bring things to where they are today. The class currently has 16 four and five-star recruits according to the rankings.

Before we tell you what ESPN said about the class, it’s worth noting that the top ten behind the Buckeyes consist of Tennessee, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida, USC, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, and Miami.

Next … What ESPN says about Ohio State’s No. 1 ranked class

ESPN’s thoughts on Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class

“Ryan Day signed the No. 5-ranked class in February, and he is in line for his first No. 1 class as a head coach. A pair of five-stars headline the class in No. 1 overall Jack Sawyer, an in-state defensive end, and Virginia running back TreVeyon Henderson. The signal-caller is ESPN 300 Kyle McCord, and he will throw to high school teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. at the next level. The Buckeyes’ class is built with players from across the nation, with versatile ESPN 300 DL Tunmise Adeleye out of IMG Academy via Houston, ESPN 300 OG Donovan Jackson from the Houston area, ESPN 300 CB Jakailin Johnson out of Missouri, ESPN 300 RB Evan Pryor out of North Carolina, ESPN 300 WR Denzel Burke out of Arizona, ESPN 300 ATH Andre Turrentine out of Tennessee and ESPN 300 ATH Jantzen Dunn out of Kentucky. In-state ESPN 300 prospects in the fold are DT Mike Hall, WR Jayden Ballard, ILB Reid Carrico, OT Ben Christman and S Jaylen Johnson.”

Remember too, right now, the class only sits at 19 members and there’s still room for five or six more — with some big fish still sitting out there. Ohio State is in the thick of the running for the class of 2021’s No. 1 rated class, but it’ll likely have to hold off some of the traditional big boys who will no doubt close very well.
