PITTSBURGH — Always one to speak his mind, Steelers rookie running back Najee Harris didn't appreciate one remark about his inspirational background during ESPN's "Monday Night Football" broadcast against the Bears.
Play-by-play man Steve Levy, as part of a segment highlighting Harris' story of being homeless at times growing up, shared an anecdote that Harris was so used to that life that he actually preferred to sleep on the floor when he got to college at Alabama. Problem is, that wasn't true. Levy accidentally confused that for a detail about the life of Josh Jacobs, another star running back out of Alabama who was a first-round pick a few years before Harris.
"Bra I ain't sleep on no dam floor in college," Harris tweeted not long after the 29-27 win at Heinz Field. "I slept on my bed."
It's part of an ongoing frustration between Harris and numerous broadcasters, many of whom often mispronounce his first name as "Nah-jay" instead of "Nah-jee." That wasn't an issue for the Monday night crew, but Levy did apologize Monday afternoon for making an error while he was trying to shine a light on what makes Harris' journey so special.
"I got this part wrong Najee, my mistake," Levy tweeted at Harris. "Your story is inspirational & mission to positively impact is admirable."
Levy added that he would be donating to "Da' Bigger Picture Foundation," Harris' initiative to help the Pittsburgh community.
