ESPN’s Matt Barrie Can’t Resist Roasting Cowboys During XFL Game

The NFL season is over, but the Cowboys are still getting roasted.

The 2023 XFL campaign kicked off this weekend, and Sunday’s action between the St. Louis Battlehawks and San Antonio Brahmas featured a timely quip about the Cowboys.

ESPN play-by-play announcer Matt Barrie couldn’t resist cracking a joke at the Cowboys’ expense after Brahmas kicker John Parker Romo made a field goal to give San Antonio a 3–0 lead.

“Thirty-five more points and that over will hit,” Barrie began, referencing the betting total. “Also by my math, you’ve got a Romo playing football in Texas in February.”

Barrie, of course, was taking a jab at former Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo, who went 2-4 as a starter in the playoffs with the Cowboys. Dallas has not reached the Super Bowl since 1995 season.

Sunday marked the second consecutive day that an XFL game featured in a joke at the Cowboys’ expense. On Saturday, William Joy of WFAA-TV in Dallas took a shot at America’s Team following a game between the Arlington Renegades and Vegas Vipers.

“Even though attendance was pretty decent today, the weather probably kept a lot of people away. There were a lot of people in heavy winter coats, a lot of people in blankets,” Joy said. “But, frankly, I think people are just excited to have a team in Arlington that actually plays football games in February.”

As long as the Cowboys keep faltering in the playoffs, the jokes most certainly will continue.
