Ranking the Houston Texans last in a 2021 NFL power ranking is as bold as holding up a sandwich board expressing a majoritarian view.
Giving the Texans last place in a power ranking that looks over the next three years is a different twist on a familiar theme.
According to ESPN, Houston has the worst outlook of any NFL team over the next three seasons with an overall score of 60.6. The Texans’ roster earned a score of 54.3, the worst in the league. The Texans were 31st in quarterback at 57.8, which must indicate that Deshaun Watson was not factored in. Coaching scored 63.8, and drafting garnered 60.8, both of which were last in the league. The front office led by new general manager Nick Caserio got a 72.5 score, 22nd in the NFL.
Field Yates summed up why the Texans were ranked dead last.
Nick Caserio inherited a situation with fewer resources than virtually any other new general manager in recent history, including limited cap space to add impact players in free agency and severely depleted draft capital. The future of Deshaun Watson is unclear amid sexual assault allegations from 22 different women, casting doubt about his standing with the franchise separate and apart from his unhappiness that surfaced prior to the allegations. The roster lacks many blue-chip players, but Caserio is extremely astute and understands the challenge ahead. Patience, Texans fans.
Things could change in the course of a year, as Caserio noted with “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] on June 14.
‘What you try to do is look at what you’re dealing with right now with your team and each year is different,” Caserio said. “Each team is going to be different.”
The Texans’ 2021 squad is fraught with questions that may not be adequately solved over the course of training camp. However, the Texans will need to lay the right culture so that when they are able to assemble a better roster, they can return to securing the AFC South as a prerequisite to larger goals.
