The history of the game and the best teams to play in the NBA are already on the minds of the basketball-loving public. Highlights from old games have dominated the internet and the airways, as well as plenty of content on this here website. A lot of that also has to do with the fact that the highly-anticipated “The Last Dance” documentary series about Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls is set to premiere on Sunday night. With all of that in mind, ESPN’s Kevin Pelton put together a his list of the greatest dynasties of All-Time in NBA history to see where Jordan’s Bulls rank.
According to Pelton’s work, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat rated out as the No. 9 dynasty of All-Time. Their era, compared to others, was a relatively short four seasons. However, Pelton writes that their era had a peak level that was very rare.
Still, Miami’s run before James returned to Cleveland was surpassed over a four-year span by only four teams on this list. (Among the top five, the ’80s Celtics were the one that never had a four-year stretch that rated this well.) That merits the Heat a spot among the NBA’s top dynasties.
As far as Pelton’s rankings were concerned, nobody had a better dynasty than Bill Russell’s Celtics. Which traditional metrics, such as Russell’s 11 championship rings, also bear out pretty well.
