ESPN predicts Bears won’t re-sign CB Bryce Callahan

The Chicago Bears have two massive free agents set to hit the open market next week in cornerback Bryce Callahan and safety Adrian Amos. And while the club would love to bring both defensive playmakers back in the fold, the odds are only one will return.

According to ESPN, don’t count on it being Callahan.

Slot corners have become more valuable in today’s NFL, and they will remain so with pass-heavy teams in the NFC North such as the Packers and Vikings. Callahan has put in four seasons with the Bears after signing as an undrafted rookie, so they know what they have in him.

Prediction: While Chicago would like to keep him, the bet here is an offer will come that’s too much to stomach.

I think most analysts would assume this is the way free agency is going to end up for the Bears, especially now that Amos has a ton of competition at safety with Landon Collins and Eric Weddle added to the list of available free agents. As a result, Amos’ price tag will come down a bit and he may be the easier player to re-sign.

As for Callahan, he’s going to get paid. And whether he’s too injury prone to deserve a big contract isn’t the point; all that matters is one team, with a lot of money to spend and a need at corner, will prioritize Callahan as a player on the rise who has yet to reach his full potential.

Cha-ching.
