ESPN pegs Brandon Scherff, Ryan Kerrigan to sign new deals before 2020 season

Aside from a few late additions that may be made here or there, the majority of NFL teams have their rosters pretty much set for the upcoming training camp sessions, where the lineup will eventually be cut down before the regular season starts.

What hasn’t been finalized, though, is some of the contracts that these players will sign. For the Washington Redskins, there are two veteran players who currently are under contract to play in 2020, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see them sign a new deal before things get underway. ESPN released a list of 50-plus players who could sign new contracts before the new season, and both RG Brandon Scherff and DE Ryan Kerrigan are on the list.

Washington franchised Scherff, who has been a top-level guard for them and has the ability to slide out to tackle if the team ends up with a need there. Since Scherff made $12.525 million on his fifth-year option last year, his franchise-tag number is higher than the normal offensive line number (it can be no lower than 120% of his previous year’s salary, by rule). So Scherff pockets a cool $15.03 million if he does nothing. It could be tough to get him to agree on an extension with all of that money already guaranteed.

With the Redskins likely wanting to keep Scherff around for the extended future, they will also have to make a decision on Kerrigan, who has a significant amount of salary cap allocated to him this season. He turns 32 this season and is expected to take a lesser role with the addition of Chase Young, though he is still due $11.5 million on his contract.

If neither deal is reworked, both players will still be playing for the Redskins in 2020, but if that is to continue for years to come, something will have to be agreed upon.
