ESPN names Kyle Lauletta as a ‘veteran’ the Giants could cut

At the conclusion of training camp, all 32 NFL teams will face the harsh reality of cut-down day and all that comes with it. That includes potentially saying goodbye to some veterans who are either reaching the twilight of their career or carry a cap hit that is no longer justifiable.

When looking at the New York Giants’ roster, cornerback Janoris Jenkins is a name (and contract) that stands out. And under normal circumstances, he’s likely a guy that would be pegged as a potential veteran cut.

But here in 2019, that’s not going to happen. The Giants themselves have made that abundantly clear. So if not Jenkins, who could be a surprise veteran cut?

ESPN recently pondered that very question and somehow settled on second-year quarterback Kyle Lauletta.

Yes, he quickly became a veteran once the Giants drafted quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick. Now, one year after being selected in the fourth round of the 2018 draft, his roster spot is in jeopardy. The Giants weren’t happy with how Lauletta acted last year (which included his arrest for a driving accident) and didn’t think he was anywhere near ready as a quarterback. Jones and Eli Manning are guaranteed roster spots. Lauletta will have to earn his by outplaying Alex Tanney, whom the Giants like. It didn’t help that he had his knee cleaned out earlier this year and missed some of the offseason.

While it’s likely Lauletta will be sent packing now that Daniel Jones is in the building, it still feels rather odd to call the sophomore with almost no experience a “veteran.” But for the lack of a better option, Lauletta fits.
