Sports fans probably wouldn't mind having a real ESPN8: The Ocho in their lives right now.
That was a great gag from the movie, "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" in which the "The Ocho" says: "Bringing you the finest in seldom-seen sports from around the globe since 1999. If it's almost a sport, we've got it here."
With no live sports being broadcast in the United States because of the coronavirus pandemic, fans are watching old sporting events when they can.
To help fill the void, ESPN announced Thursday it was bumping up the day it usually gives a nod to "Dodgeball" by turning ESPN2 into "The Ocho" this Sunday. That had happened on Aug. 8 (8/8) in the past.
Here is what ESPN wrote in a news release: "No, it's not the eighth of August, or the eighth of anything or even August at all. That is the magic ESPN8: The Ocho. There is always a place for a full 24 hours of seldom seen sports so Sunday, March 22 on ESPN2 will be just that, a full day of exciting content from Ocho stunts past."
Some of the "events" to be televised include (with descriptions were needed):
_ 2019 Spikeball College Championship
_ World Axe Throwing League
_ The Stone Skipping Championship
_ 2019 Jelle's Marble Runs: Participants and spectators are marbles in these races.
_ 2007 World Sport Stacking Championships: Competitors are timed as they stack specially designed cups in predetermined sequences.
