ESPN analyst says blood tests are ‘very good’ after fifth cancer diagnosis

  • Longtime college basketball announcer Dick Vitale announced positive progress in his battle with cancer , his fifth diagnosis , stating that recent blood tests were "very good" and immunotherapy treatments are "very effective."
  • Vitale, 87, shared on social media that the treatments are successfully eliminating the cancer, following his April announcement of the latest diagnosis.
  • His cancer journey began in 2021 with melanoma, followed by lymphoma, vocal cord cancer in 2023, and lymph node cancer in 2024, which required surgery.
  • In recognition of his resilience, Vitale received the Jimmy V Award for perseverance in 2022, an honor named after his close friend and late college basketball coach Jim Valvano.
  • Vitale has been a dedicated fundraiser for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, co-founded by Valvano, and while he made limited appearances on ESPN last season, his plans for the upcoming season remain unannounced.
