Escaped Highland cow found wandering the streets of Sunderland near to nursing home

An escaped Highland cow was found wandering the streets of Sunderland by emergency services.

On Friday afternoon, Sunderland City Council put out a warning to residents about the animal, which had been sighted in the St Marks Road area of the city, close to the nursing home.

But firefighters confirmed later in the day that they had located the cow and managed to keep it in one spot until its owner came along to take it back home.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Sunderland came across an escaped Highland cow today in the St Marks Road area of Sunderland.

"We carefully guided the cow into a secure location along with @northumbriapol until the arrival of the owner with a horse box."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said on social media: "We’re pleased to confirm the bull has been safely secured and is now on its way home for a chilled weekend."
