NAN: A young drug convict who escaped on Saturday while being brought to a hospital in Muang district for treatment has been recaptured, police said.
Roong Sae Song, 22, a drug convict undergoing rehabilitation at the Khao Noi temporary prison, pretended to be suffering from an acute stomachache, threw himself on the ground and writhed in pain while being escorted into Nan Hospital for treatment, stunning the warders.
He suddenly rose up and quickly ran away without shackles across Nakhon Nan bridge opposite the hospital, heading in the direction of Phu Phiang district.
Teams of police from Mae Charin, Phu Phiang and Muang districts were deployed to hunt for the escapee.
The prisoner was finally recaptured in a house in Ban Nakha village in Mae Charim district at 1pm on Sunday. Appearing weak and dishevelled, he surrendered to police without resistance.
According to the police, Roong said he fled because he was worried about his two young children, but did not dare to go straight to see them, knowing he was being hunted.
Roong made his escape attempt despite the fact that he had only a few months left to serve in jail. He was undergoing rehabilitation and occupational training at the Khao Noi temporary prison, preparing to return to society.
