Escape to the romantic Cayman Islands

Made up of three islands (Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac) and strung across the western Caribbean between Cuba and Jamaica, the Cayman Islands offer a picture postcard image of tropical life – crescents of white coral sand with not a footprint in sight, hidden coves, brilliant turquoise waters and a deep-blue sky.

The islands' relative proximity to the US (480 miles south of Miami) has led to an increased development of Grand Cayman's western side, while its status as a financial centre means it draws an international range of visitors. Those seeking a more tranquil setting should head to the eastern side (also known as the "Caribbean side") of the island, which is just a short drive away through the verdant, colourful countryside. Here, you'll find a largely undeveloped coastline dotted with private beach villas and cottages served by simple beach cafes and family-minded village life.

Every beach is open to the public, which means there are plenty of secluded spots to relax in solitude. For example, Cayman Kai on Grand Cayman has several miles of beach to stroll along. On Little Cayman, Point of Sand offers more secluded stretches of beach, while Cayman Brac offers dramatic towering cliffs, known locally as the Bluff.

The islands' cuisine reflects both sides of its character – for an international flavour the opulent Blue by Eric Ripert at the Ritz-Carlton on Grand Cayman would appeal for a dressed-up romantic meal. But you should also sample Caymanian cuisine – the national dish is turtle and there are plenty of other local specialities to try.

As you'd expect, seafood is a staple: conch stew, fresh lobster, snapper, tuna, or mahi-mahi prepared Cayman-style with tomatoes, peppers and onions. Another local dish is pepperpot, prepared from leafy spinach-like callaloo, potatoes, hot peppers, and spices. There are more than 150 eateries to choose from, and many restaurants have balconies and tables on the sand so you can overlook the Caribbean sea and watch the sun set as you dine by candlelight.

Most of the island's accommodation is located along the coastline, with sweeping sea views and direct beach access. If you're looking for luxury, head for one of the resorts on the renowned Seven Mile Beach. The Westin Casuarina, for example, is home to the island's largest swimming pool and a full-service spa.

For the ultimate island getaway, head to Little Cayman, which is a 40-minute flight from Grand Cayman. Popular with honeymooners, try Pirates Point Resort on Little Cayman for ocean-front rooms and secluded gardens. You can get even further from the crowds by staying in your own private villa.

The Caymanian beaches are good for more than just sunshine. Surrounded by miles of unspoiled coral reefs and warm, clear waters, the Cayman Islands boast world-class diving and snorkelling – look out for turtles, reef sharks and an amazing array of tropical fish – while, for the adventurous diver, there are numerous shipwrecks to explore. To really get the adrenaline pumping, set sail with the Cayman Islands sailing club, or try your hand at parasailing, kitesurfing or kayaking through the mangrove forests. Or if you prefer dry land, you can explore the shoreline on horseback.

To discover the island's history, head inland and you'll find plenty of attractions to explore. On Grand Cayman, explore 18th-century Caymanian life at the living history museum of Pedro St James (also known as Pedro Castle) or visit Old Homestead, known as the "Pink House", to see classic island architecture.

For 360-degree views of the island, make the climb up the 23-metre observation tower at Camana Bay – one of the island's tallest structures. For a romantic way to end the day, take a sunset sail on the Caribbean Sea with Red Sail Sports or simply enjoy the blissful solitude in a hammock woven for two, slung between palm trees.
