Escape to the Country's Jonnie Irwin gives fans cancer battle fitness update

Jonnie Irwin left fans delighted with a new update which shows how he is battling back against terminal cancer. The Escape to the Country presenter posted a picture of himself on an item of gym equipment - showing fans how he is making progress to stay fit.

The 49-year-old is fighting against cancer which has spread from his lungs to his brain - but has been defying the predictions of doctors. Fans were delighted to see the shot from his home gym - but they did notice that his footwear left a bit to be desired!

Jonnie, who originally comes from Leicestershire, said: “Mixed feelings about having a weights bench at home - on the plus side I’ve got no one asking me to move on or ushering me to get a move on the downside I’ve done absolutely nothing but sit in my bum and search the net for the last half an hour. #wormhole #procrastination.”

As well as pleased he was feeling well enough to consider pumping iron followers took note of his ‘socks and sandals’ combination - popular the world over with vicars. Ian Courtney said: “At least nobody will question your socks and sandals combo!”

Nattin Atters said: “Who cares if you’re a socks and sandals man! It’s better to be a trendsetter than a sheep! Sending you huge healing hugs.”

Many were delighted to see him and wanted to pledge support. CumminsKrill added: “I’m visiting from TX and have been staying in said: “Newcastle-on-Tyne for several days. Just knowing I’m in the same city as you is exciting! I’ve watched Escape to the Country and A Place in the Sun forever. Escape to the Country is how I find neat places to visit in the UK. Continuing to keep you in steadfast prayer!”

Mulva 71 said: “Don’t tell me sitting on a machine isn’t enough. That’s my main workout.” Tracy Cyd said: “At least you are on the weights bench. Hope you are doing ok and family too.”

Monton Fashion House said: ”Do what your body tells you Johnnie, you're doing fab. I'm sat wiped by chemo yesterday n today but knowing the feeling lifts at some point soon. Keep going bud!”

Jonnie has been renovating his house in the north east for his wife Jessica and three children to live in. He is keen for them to be there because Jessica can be near her family for support.

Jonnie who also presented A Place in the Sun, held his 50th birthday celebrations earlier this year, has been battling the disease with medical treatment like hyperbaric oxygen therapy and has also reorganised his diet to ‘starve’ the cancer - and has been trying to stay fit too.
