Escape the City: The Scarlet, Cornwall

Tucked away atop Cornwall’s Mawgan Porth, The Scarlet is an adult-only hotel (though dogs are welcome for an extra £15 per night), quietly leading the sustainable charge. Everything from the art to

the food is locally sourced and you’ll find bedroom slippers made from recycled plastic bottles as well as electric car charging points.

Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of its clifftop position but the spa takes centre stage with its reed-filtered pool and all-natural mud treatments. For burnt-out Londoners, one of The Scarlet’s “journeys”, based on the principles of Ayurveda, should top your to-do list. Begin with a consultation to establish your dosha type before embarking on a bespoke treatment plan involving massage, hammam or body scrub, and a guided meditation in one of the tented treatment rooms. There are also complimentary yoga classes for all hotel guests.

You’ve probably seen The Scarlet’s wooden barrel hot tubs all over Instagram and they really are as cool as they look. Grab a pal, a glass of champagne and take in the expansive views of the wild Atlantic. Naturally, the hot tubs are mega-popular so book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Of the 37 room, sizes go from “Just Right” to “Indulgent”. For a quirky layout book a “Unique” room, split over two floors with a courtyard garden and spiral staircase leading to an upstairs sitting room.

Got some energy to explore? Make the 30-minute walk along the clifftop towards the National Trust-owned Bedruthan Steps and reward yourself with an indulgent Cornish cream tea.

Newquay Airport is five minutes’ drive away, with direct flights from Stansted and Gatwick, making this the perfect retreat for Londoners.
