ESB crews working to restore power around the country following Storm Brendan chaos

ESB crews are working to restore power to parts of the country following the aftermath of Storm Brendan.

The country was pummelled by severe winds and torrential rain as Met Eireann issued an orange weather warning.

Thousands of homes and businesses were left without power following the severe weather conditions a number of fallen trees on power lines causing outages.

ESB Networks said last night that it had restored power in more than 100,000 homes, farms and businesses throughout the day but by last night 32,000 customers were still without supply.

Spokesman Derek Hynes said the worst-hit areas remained in the south-east with around 12,000 people in Co Wexford affected.

This morning the ESB reported a fault in Kincasslagh and surrounding areas of Co. Donegal.

According to ESB Powercheck, there are still a number of faults in parts of Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Galway, Sligo, Kerry, Kilkenny and Mayo.

Apologising to anyone left without electricity, Mr Hynes added the supply would hopefully be fully restored later today.

The ESB has also urged people to report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1850 372 999.

Storm Brendan caused havoc yesterday while gusts reaching 135kmh recorded at Roche’s Point in Co Cork while wind speeds passed 100kmh in counties Kerry and Mayo.

Thunder and lightning also struck in the south-east region as the first storm of the year rolled in.

The entire country was placed under an orange weather alert until 3pm, at which point some counties were downgraded to a yellow status. By midnight, both alerts had been lifted.
